About

This website was initially created for Salatiel Solano by his family to provide updates during his hospitalization, and now it serves as a memorial to him, keeping his memory alive.

Salatiel is a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, son, friend, and so much more to a lot of different people. Only at age 67, he is a brother of 5, father of 6, grandfather of 12, and great-grandfather of 2. If you know his family, you know that we absolutely adore him. He is always there to make us laugh or always shows up to support us in everything we do. He truly is loved by many, even when visiting his old workplace from where he retired, he loved to stop and catch up with old friends. He was such an active person- it was hard to get him to sit still! He spent much of his free time working on his vehicles or tending to his garden/yard that he dedicated to his wife. He also loved going to the flea market every weekend (and going around 2 or 3 times to make sure he doesn’t miss anything). Every Sunday, you would see him at Grace Lutheran Church, singing along to every hymn.

What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else?

Romans 8:31-32

Diagnosis

Early 2023, we noticed Sala losing his voice and sounding hoarse, ultimately leading us to find that he has papillary thyroid cancer. A surgery was scheduled to remove his thyroid in hopes of getting rid of the cancer. However, during surgery, it was discovered that the cancer had spread to his trachea (windpipe) and the surgeon was forced to abandon the surgery as AdventHealth did not have the capability to remove it due to the size and risks associated with it. Salatiel was referred to Wake Forest Baptist where we were told he not only had to have his thryoid removed but also part of his trachea. The second surgery went well but upon removing the breathing tubes after, it was found his left vocal nerve was no longer working. With the cause unknown, it is difficult to determine whether this nerve will function again. Why is this nerve important? Well the vocal cords should open and close as you breathe, Salatiel’s cords did not open, leading him to be put back on a ventilator to breathe for him. Because of this, he had remained sedated since his surgery. The doctors had called this a unique situation from the beginning, and though his lungs and all his other organs were working fine, things remained complicated as he contracted hospital pneumonia. He was moved from the surgical intensive care unit to the cardiovascular intensive care unit. Salatiel's organs began to shutdown shortly after. His entire family tried every extensive measure and remained by his side the entire time. Salatiel passed away on July 6th, 2023.
